Why you should join the Letterforms Study Group at the Tipoteca 2025—Reason no. 13: Scholarships

In 2022 and 2023 I was able to secure scholarships for people under 35 to attend Legacy of Letters. The recipients of the scholarships included graduates of CooperType, the University of Reading, École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne, the Politecnico di Milano, and one individual who had apprenticed with Alan Kitching.
For the Letterforms Study Group at the Tipoteca workshop in 2025 I have again been able to obtain funds for scholarships. This time they will be partial scholarships of $2000 and the age limit for eligibility has been raised to 40. Money for five individuals is available.
The scholarships are being provided by Mark Simonson, Monotype, Cyrus Highsmith of Occupant Fonts, TypeTogether, the School of Visual Arts, and an anonymous individual.
The scholarships are intended to encourage individuals either at the beginning of their career or the middle to attend this workshop. It is aimed at type designers, typographers, calligraphers, letterers, and graphic designers. No formal training is required. I am looking for people with a passion about making letters and curiosity about their history, technique, materials, and methods of fabrication.
The application process for a partial scholarship is relatively simple. A small portfolio of work and a brief statement about your background will be required along with the application form which can be downloaded below
As of April 25, 2025 four of the five available scholarships have been awarded. Applications will be accepted until May 15, 2025.
Letterforms Study Group at the Tipoteca 2025
The workshop will take place from June 8 to June 15, 2025. Participation in the workshop is limited to eight people. To secure a place a non-refundable deposit of $300 is required.
